Carl Prater is currently a freelanced graphic designer and illustrator based out of Seattle, WA. Before moving to the PNW in late 2019 he was a Senior Designer for Penguin Random House in New York, where he worked in the advertising and marketing department for the literary imprint, Knopf. While there, he regularly designed ads for print publications such as The New York Times Book Review, The Atlantic and Harper’s as well as for digital platforms like NPR, Slate and NewYorkMag.com. From small static/animated graphics to 300-foot banners, Carl has designed a variety of collateral for best-selling authors like Haruki Murakami, Patti Smith, Toni Morrison, and Oliver Sacks.
Prior to Penguin Random House, he was a creative director/illustrator/designer for Broadway Motion Design (now Broadway Media) in California, creating artwork for digital projections used in stage productions in lieu of traditional hand-painted backdrops in addition to leading the development of the company’s visual identity and marketing materials.
